How to Debate Like a Rational and Mature Adult on the Internet

Whilst on the internet, you will be exposed to all kinds of different people with views different than your own. You may find yourself even defending your views whilst attacking the views of others. However, how does one debate the issues like a rational and mature adult?

Step one: Be Honest
If you don't know something, or are unclear, don't be afraid to admit it. If someone proves you wrong, don't be afraid to admit that they are right. Also don't be afraid to admit that there are possible alternatives to your own view on a subject. It is simply being intellectually honest, and honest onlookers and lurkers will give you kudos for it. If someone insults you for admitting an error or that you are unsure or unclear over a matter then simply point out that there is no shame in being honest. It will just make them look like an idiot.

Step two: Research
If you are ever unsure of something, or need to look something up, always be prepared to do the necessary leg work to clue yourself up over the issues being discussed. If you ever find yourself in a discussion where you are presented with things you don't know, simply look it up! Even if it means going to a nearby library and getting out some books, it shows that you are willing to learn. The best views are ones based on good reasons and facts borne from serious and honest research. That means changing your beliefs in the face of evidence.

Step three: Be Civil
Don't insult someone just because they disagree with you, or because they don't know or don't understand something. Insults are reserved for those who prove themselves to be ignorant and unwilling to bother in rational and mature debate. If someone insults you, don't automatically insult them back. Give them a chance to prove themselves. If, after several attempts at reasoning with them, they continue, feel free to give it back to them.

You are now ready to participate in internet discussions, although be warned, the majority of people on the internet simply aren't interested in rational and mature debate and would rather prefer to be douchebags. You will often just find yourself ignoring them, mocking them or even parodying and satirising their style to demonstrate their moral and intellectual bankruptcy.
